PROJECT TITLE: Microbial Corrosion in Firewater Pipeline

Joint Project with Fajr Petrochemical Plant

This research aimed at studying the cause of internal corrosion in a low carbon steel firewater pipeline in a petrochemical industry. Records show a sharp increase in the monthly number of leakages and shut downs, caused by pitting. Firewater pipeline is a strategic part of the petrochemical plant. Increased number of shut downs obviously imposes a lot of safety risks. According to internal regulations, this pipeline is already very close to the critical zone. Visual/microscopic examinations, chemical analysis of the corrosion products as well as the pipeline material were performed to find out what causes the observed excessive corrosion in this case. Methodology and results, obtained in this study, could be used to analyze and avoid similar situations.
