PROJECT TITLE (BSc, 2016-2018):

Synthesis and Characterization of Nanocrystalline TiAl Intermetallic Compound Using Mechanical Alloying

In this research nanocrystalline TiAl intermetallic compound was synthesized by mechanical alloying (MA) of elemental Ti and Al powders. TiAl intermetallic alloy is known as an emerging group of materials for demanding high-temperature aerospace and structural applications. They show an excellent combination of stiffness and specific strength as well as superior high-temperature oxidation and corrosion resistance. Effects of milling time (with rotation speed 350 rpm and ball to powder ratio 10:1) on the particle size, particle morphologies, crystallite size, and lattice strains were studied using X-ray diffractometer (XRD), and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Results show that nanocrystalline TiAl compound was formed after 40 hours of milling. Extra milling up to 60 h results in grain refinement down to 8.6 nm.
